Today was my boyfriend’s birthday, so yesterday involved a somewhat tedious job of making him a birthday cake. He’s a big fan of Mass Effect so I incorporated that by making a cake with the N7 logo on it.
I haven’t made/decorated a cake since high school (I prefer cupcakes to regular cakes), and this was my first foray into the world of fondant (which I mentioned before here), but all things considered, I think it turned out really well. My boyfriend certainly had a big smile on his face when he opened the cake box to see it.
I made a simple chocolate cake (that turned out really good despite the fact I forgot the salt) and used Duncan Hines canned vanilla frosting and Satin Ice fondant. I really, really, really didn’t want to use store-bought frosting, but since I didn’t have any sort of electric hand mixer, it was my only option. It worked out fine, and while I was weary about the taste of fondant, it tasted great with the cake.
So overall, I’m super happy with how the cake turned out, and working with fondant wasn’t as scary as I thought.
